Jacksonville, FL – Dense fog will develop overnight across parts of northeast Florida and southeast Georgia, creating hazardous travel conditions for the Thursday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect from 1 AM to 8 AM Thursday, covering portions of Duval, Nassau, Baker, and surrounding North Florida counties, as well as Camden, Charlton, and Ware counties in southeast Georgia. Visibility may fall to one-quarter mile or less in many areas.
Forecasters say fog will thicken quickly after midnight as light winds and moist air settle over the region. Areas from Jacksonville and Arlington to Fernandina Beach, Yulee, Macclenny, Kingsland, and Folkston could see the most persistent visibility reductions.
According to the NWS, drivers should plan for sudden drops in visibility along I-95, I-10, US-17, and local roadways near marshes, rivers, and low-lying terrain. Dense fog along the St. Marys River, Trout River, and near wooded rural stretches may linger longest.
The fog is expected to gradually lift after 8 AM as temperatures warm and humidity levels decrease. Until then, commuters may experience slowed traffic, difficulty seeing lane markings, and challenges spotting stopped or merging vehicles.
Motorists are urged to slow down, keep headlights on low beam, and allow additional braking distance. Those traveling early should anticipate extra travel time and remain alert for abrupt visibility changes—particularly in inland Nassau, western Duval, and southern Ware counties.
