Florida’s capital wakes up damp and gray, with thick clouds hanging low and light rain already speckling windshields. The air feels heavy, and storms are lining up for a busy afternoon commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, showers and thunderstorms increase between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m., with rain chances at 90 percent today. Highs reach near 73 degrees. Rainfall totals between a quarter and half an inch are likely, with locally higher amounts in stronger thunderstorms.

Drivers along I-10 and Monroe Street should plan for ponding water and reduced visibility late day. Lightning could interrupt outdoor events quickly. Keep umbrellas ready and avoid flooded roadways.

Storm chances taper after midnight, though a 40 percent chance of lingering showers and thunder continues into early Saturday. Skies begin to brighten Saturday afternoon with highs again near 73 degrees and only a slight shower chance after 7 a.m.

By Sunday, sunshine takes over. Highs climb to 77 with drier air settling in. Monday warms further to 79 under sunny skies. Early March looks even milder, with midweek highs trending into the lower 80s and above-normal temperatures expected into next weekend.

The unsettled pattern today marks the transition. After this round of rain, spring warmth builds steadily across North Florida.
