Waycross, Georgia – A sharp drop in temperatures is expected along the Florida-Georgia border late Sunday night, bringing the risk of freezing conditions to inland southeast Georgia and nearby northeast Florida communities by early Monday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, a Freeze Watch is in effect from late Sunday night through Monday morning for much of southeast Georgia near the state line. Temperatures could fall as low as 30 degrees, posing a threat to tender vegetation, outdoor pets, and people without adequate heat.

The watch covers Coffee, Jeff Davis, Bacon, Appling, Wayne, Pierce, Brantley, Clinch, Ware, and Charlton counties, including Waycross, Douglas, Baxley, Jesup, Alma, Folkston, Nahunta, and Homerville. Areas closer to the Florida border, including Charlton and southern Ware counties, may see the coldest readings just before sunrise. Similar cold conditions are expected to spill into nearby inland northeast Florida communities, though coastal areas should remain slightly warmer.

Residents are urged to protect sensitive plants, provide warm shelter for pets, and check on elderly neighbors and those without reliable heating. Parents should plan for cold conditions at early morning bus stops.

Additional cold weather advisories may be issued as confidence increases. Officials recommend monitoring updates through Sunday as temperatures drop overnight into Monday morning.
