Tampa, FL – Critical fire weather conditions are expected across much of central and southwest Florida Friday, as a Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. EDT. Residents in 22 counties are urged to avoid outdoor burning as warm temperatures, low humidity, and gusty winds create an environment for rapid wildfire spread.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Tampa Bay and Melbourne, east winds of 15 mph—gusting up to 25 mph—combined with humidity levels as low as 30 percent will drive dangerous fire behavior from noon through the evening.
Counties affected include Sumter, Pinellas, Polk, Hardee, DeSoto, and both coastal and inland areas of Citrus, Hernando, Pasco, Hillsborough, Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, and Lee. Additionally, a separate Red Flag Warning is active in Northern and Southern Lake County until 6 p.m., where a burn ban is already in effect due to ongoing drought.
Officials advise avoiding activities that could generate sparks, including grilling or machinery use in dry grass. Residents are encouraged to check with local fire authorities for restrictions and updates.
Any fires that develop in these conditions may spread quickly and become uncontrollable. Preparedness and prevention are critical during this high-risk period.
