Tampa, Florida — Strong winds and critically low humidity are triggering fire danger across much of central and southwest Florida today, with a Red Flag Warning in effect from noon to 7 p.m. EDT. The National Weather Service issued the warning for 20 counties, urging caution as the combination of dry conditions and gusty winds elevates the risk of wildfire.

According to the National Weather Service, wind speeds are expected to reach 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. This, paired with relative humidity levels as low as 30 percent, sets the stage for potentially rapid fire spread. Areas affected include Sumter, Polk, Hardee, Highlands, and Lee counties, along with coastal and inland regions across the forecast area.

The high fire danger is expected to persist throughout the day, with any fires that do ignite spreading quickly. The National Weather Service recommends that residents avoid outdoor burning and remain vigilant for any signs of fire in their area.

Those in the affected regions should stay alert and refrain from activities that could spark fires, such as burning debris or using grills. With critical fire conditions expected through the evening, authorities may issue further updates.
