Tampa, FL – A Red Flag Warning is in effect for much of central and southern Florida from noon to 8 p.m. Monday, as strong winds and critically low humidity create a heightened fire risk.
According to the National Weather Service, the warning applies to multiple counties, including Sumter, Polk, Hardee, Highlands, DeSoto, Citrus, Hernando, Pasco, Hillsborough, Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, and Lee in west-central Florida. In east-central Florida, affected areas include Volusia, Lake, Orange, Seminole, Osceola, Brevard, Okeechobee, Indian River, Saint Lucie, and Martin counties. South Florida counties such as Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, and Collier are also under the warning.
Forecasters report northwest winds between 10 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph. Relative humidity levels are expected to drop as low as 25%, creating conditions where fires can ignite and spread rapidly. Temperatures are forecast to reach the mid-to-upper 70s.
Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and take precautions to prevent accidental fires. Any fires that develop could spread quickly due to the dry and windy conditions. Authorities recommend securing outdoor items that could be blown by wind and staying informed about local fire restrictions.
A Red Flag Warning is issued when a combination of strong winds, low humidity, and warm temperatures significantly increase wildfire risk. The warning is expected to expire at 8 p.m., but residents should remain cautious as dry conditions persist.
