Daytona Beach, FL – Although Tropical Storm Imelda is tracking east into the Atlantic, dangerous weather conditions will linger along Florida’s east coast through Tuesday, forecasters warn.

According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, a Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for coastal waters from Flagler Beach to Jupiter Inlet, with offshore seas building up to 18 feet. Onshore, gusty winds of 35 to 40 mph are possible, especially near the coast. A Wind Advisory is in place for Volusia, Brevard, Indian River, St. Lucie, and Martin counties through early Tuesday.

Forecasters highlighted that rip currents and high surf will remain life-threatening at all central Florida beaches. Surf heights could peak at 6 to 10 feet north of Cape Canaveral and 4 to 8 feet to the south, raising the risk of beach and dune erosion. Boaters are urged to avoid venturing out, with conditions labeled “extreme.”

Imelda’s shift offshore will reduce the risk of direct land impacts, but the National Weather Service emphasized that hazardous marine and coastal conditions will persist into midweek. Inland, rainfall could cause localized flooding, particularly west of Daytona Beach where precipitation chances are higher.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid swimming, and monitor local forecasts.
