Melbourne, Fla. – A Tropical Storm Watch is now in effect for the Northern Brevard Barrier Islands, where winds up to 45 mph and coastal flooding could develop by Sunday afternoon. Emergency officials are urging residents in low-lying areas to complete storm preparations today before conditions worsen.

According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, peak winds are expected to range between 20 and 30 mph with gusts reaching tropical storm strength. While widespread damage is not anticipated, unsecured objects could become airborne, tree limbs may snap, and driving across bridges or causeways could turn hazardous. Power outages are also possible if stronger gusts develop.

The storm surge threat is limited but concerning. Forecasters warn water could rise up to 2 feet above ground in surge-prone areas along the barrier islands, leading to dangerous driving conditions on coastal roads, dune erosion, and strong rip currents. Rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches are also expected, with localized flooding in poor drainage spots and low-lying neighborhoods.

Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary coastal travel once conditions deteriorate, and monitor local updates. Watches remain in effect through the weekend, with the storm’s impacts likely to linger into early next week.
