Miami, Fla. – Heavy rain could bring minor street flooding across Miami and South Florida on Saturday as storms move through the region during the afternoon and evening. Drivers should prepare for reduced visibility and possible ponding on major roadways.

According to the National Weather Service in Miami, widespread rainfall amounts are expected to stay under 1 inch, but isolated higher totals of 2 to 3 inches could fall in urban corridors, especially from Miami to Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. That level of rain in a short time may be enough to trigger localized flooding in neighborhoods and along low-lying streets.

The most likely window for storms runs from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., with downpours capable of overwhelming storm drains during the evening commute. A marginal risk, or 5 to 15 percent chance, of excessive rainfall has been issued for the metro area.

Motorists are urged to avoid driving through flooded roads and to allow extra travel time in case of backups on I-95, U.S. 1, and other busy arteries.

Conditions are expected to improve late tonight as drier air moves in, reducing the risk of flooding through the second half of the weekend.
