Melbourne, Florida – A noticeable shot of colder air is expected to arrive across east central Florida early next week, bringing increased frost potential and unusually chilly mornings for mid-January. Residents should prepare for colder-than-normal conditions, especially overnight and during the early morning hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, a deep dip in the jet stream will allow colder air to spill southward late Sunday into Monday. Many locations have a high probability of dropping to 40 degrees or colder Monday morning, with some inland areas facing a meaningful chance of reaching freezing temperatures.

Communities such as Daytona Beach and Leesburg show a greater than 95 percent chance of temperatures falling to 40 degrees or below Monday and Tuesday mornings. While coastal areas like Melbourne and Vero Beach are less likely to see a freeze, inland locations including Okeechobee and portions of the interior Treasure Coast could briefly dip near the freezing mark early Monday.

The cold will be most noticeable Monday and Tuesday mornings, when light winds and clear skies may allow frost to form in colder inland spots. Sensitive vegetation, including tropical plants and winter crops, could be affected. Pet owners are urged to bring animals indoors, and residents using space heaters should follow safety guidelines.

Temperatures are expected to moderate gradually by midweek, but residents should continue monitoring updates as frost advisories or freeze headlines may be issued as confidence increases.
