ORLANDO, Fla. — With stores packed and parking lots overflowing for Black Friday deals, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office is urging Florida shoppers to take extra steps to protect their holiday purchases.

Deputies issued a simple reminder: never leave gifts or valuables in plain sight inside your car. Instead, place them in the trunk or take them home immediately after shopping.

Officials say thefts from vehicles often spike during the holiday shopping season, especially when bags, electronics, or wrapped gifts are visible through car windows. Thieves frequently target busy mall and outlet parking lots where shoppers make multiple stops throughout the day.

“Don’t make your car a target,” deputies said in their Friday post, noting that even a few minutes away can give thieves an opportunity to strike.

The sheriff’s office also recommends parking in well-lit areas, locking all doors, and staying alert to your surroundings when loading purchases. Shoppers are encouraged to report any suspicious behavior to local law enforcement.

The reminder comes as thousands across Central Florida head out for Black Friday and Small Business Saturday deals. Deputies say taking a few precautions can help keep the holidays focused on celebration — not theft reports.
