Tallahassee, Florida – Showers and thunderstorms are returning across the Florida Big Bend and surrounding areas today, with a few storms capable of turning strong to severe and creating localized hazards through the afternoon and early evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, waves of showers and thunderstorms will move through the region from late morning into this evening. The area is under a Level 1 of 5 marginal severe weather risk, meaning isolated severe storms are possible. The primary concerns include damaging wind gusts between 40 and 60 mph and large hail measuring one inch in diameter or greater. While the threat remains low, a tornado or two cannot be ruled out.
The highest risk area includes all of southeast Alabama, southwest Georgia, and the Florida Panhandle and Big Bend. Cities such as Tallahassee, Panama City, Dothan, Albany, and Valdosta could see storms intensify quickly as they move through. Brief heavy rain may also reduce visibility and create ponding on roadways during stronger downpours.
Residents are urged to stay weather-aware throughout the day, especially during the afternoon hours when storms may peak in intensity. Secure loose outdoor items, avoid sheltering under trees during storms, and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings.
Storm activity is expected to diminish later this evening as the system exits the region. Additional updates or warnings may be issued as storms develop, and residents should closely monitor local alerts through the remainder of the day.
