TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Coastal communities in Florida’s Big Bend could see dangerous downpours today, with the National Weather Service warning of more than two inches of rain falling in just six hours. Forecasters say the heaviest rain will fall through early this evening, creating a heightened risk for flash flooding.
According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, the greatest impacts are expected along coastal areas from Carrabelle to Saint Marks, including Sopchoppy, Crawfordville and the city of Tallahassee. Urban neighborhoods and poor-drainage zones could experience rapid water buildup, especially where storm drains are clogged.
Emergency officials urge drivers to avoid water-covered roads. “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” remains the message, as even shallow floodwaters can stall vehicles or sweep them away. Rural roads near creeks and rivers could also see localized flooding by nightfall.
The heavy rainfall threat is expected to taper off after sunset, but lingering showers may continue into early Tuesday. Additional advisories could be issued if rain bands stall over the same areas.
