Melbourne, Fla. – Dangerous surf conditions are hammering Florida’s east coast Thursday, with breaking waves up to 7 feet prompting warnings from lifeguards and emergency officials. Rip currents remain the biggest hazard, pulling even strong swimmers into deep water through at least Friday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, a High Surf Advisory is in effect until 11 p.m. Thursday, while a High Rip Current Risk will continue through late Friday. The affected stretch runs from Volusia County south through Brevard, Indian River, St. Lucie and Martin counties.

Beach erosion has been reported in spots along Brevard’s barrier islands, and officials are urging swimmers to stay out of the water entirely. Lifeguards warn that conditions near piers, jetties and sandbar breaks will be especially treacherous. Surfers are also advised to avoid the water due to the risk of injury.

Anyone caught in a rip current should avoid fighting against it, instead floating or swimming parallel to shore until they can break free.

Hazardous beach conditions are expected to persist through the end of the week, with updated advisories possible if surf remains elevated.
