Melbourne, FL – Residents and beachgoers along Florida’s east-central coast are being urged to prepare for worsening coastal flooding and hazardous surf conditions through the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, a Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect for areas including Volusia, Brevard, Indian River, St. Lucie, and Martin counties. Tides are expected to reach 1–2 feet above normal during late morning and evening high tides, leading to saltwater flooding in low-lying roads, parking lots, and yards.
The advisory warns that conditions will worsen Friday into the weekend, with rough surf and strong rip currents posing life-threatening risks at all area beaches. Seas could reach 7–9 feet north of Cape Canaveral by Saturday, while wind gusts up to 35 mph may impact the Volusia County coastline.
“Residents should avoid flooded roads,” forecasters said. “Saltwater can damage vehicles and may be deeper than it appears.” Beach erosion and limited dune protection are also concerns as tides peak.
Rain chances remain elevated, with scattered showers and isolated storms expected Thursday and Friday. Inland highs will stay in the mid-80s, while coastal areas like Melbourne and Daytona Beach will see cooler temperatures near 83–85 degrees.
The National Weather Service advises avoiding swimming, boating, or walking near the surf line until conditions improve early next week.
