Melbourne, FL – Warm and inviting weather across east central Florida today comes with an important safety concern, as a moderate risk of rip currents is in effect at all Atlantic beaches, according to the National Weather Service in Melbourne.
Forecasters say Sunday will be warm and partly sunny, with afternoon highs ranging from the low 70s to low 80s across the region. Cities including Orlando, Melbourne, Sanford, Kissimmee, Vero Beach, and Okeechobee are expected to see highs near 78 to 81 degrees, making for a pleasant winter day by Florida standards.
Isolated to scattered showers are possible across the southern Treasure Coast, while most other locations remain dry. A light northeast breeze will persist through the afternoon.
Despite the favorable weather, officials warn of a moderate rip current risk along all Atlantic-facing beaches, including the Daytona Beach, Space Coast, and Treasure Coast. Surf heights of 2 to 3 feet are expected, which can still produce dangerous rip currents, even on sunny days.
Beachgoers are urged to swim near lifeguards, avoid swimming alone, and remember that if caught in a rip current, do not fight the current. Instead, float or swim parallel to shore until free.
The combination of warm temperatures and holiday visitors could increase beach attendance, heightening the importance of water safety awareness.
Residents and visitors across Brevard County, Volusia County, Indian River County, and St. Lucie County are encouraged to enjoy the weather responsibly and stay alert to changing surf conditions.
