Miami, FL – Dangerous marine conditions are unfolding in the Atlantic as Hurricane Humberto continues to intensify while Tropical Depression Nine gains strength near the Bahamas. A Hurricane Warning is in effect for portions of the western Atlantic, with hazardous seas and life-threatening surf expected through the week.
According to the National Weather Service, Humberto was located near 23.9N 63.3W early Sunday with sustained winds of 135 knots (155 mph) and gusts up to 165 knots. The system is forecast to track west-northwest at 11 knots, approaching 26.4N 66.4W by Monday morning before gradually turning north. Humberto is expected to remain a major hurricane before transitioning to an extratropical system later this week as it moves toward the North Atlantic.
Meanwhile, Tropical Depression Nine was located near 23.0N 77.2W Sunday morning with sustained winds of 30 knots (35 mph). Forecasters expect the system to strengthen into a tropical storm later today, and potentially a hurricane by Tuesday as it moves north-northwest, skirting the Bahamas and approaching waters off the southeastern U.S.
The marine forecast calls for deteriorating conditions off Florida and the Bahamas beginning Monday. Seas are projected to build to 25 to 37 feet by Tuesday, with hurricane-force winds possible offshore east of 79W longitude. Mariners are strongly urged to remain in port, while coastal residents should monitor official updates closely for potential impacts.
