Miami, FL – South Florida residents are being urged to prepare today as Tropical Depression Nine strengthens in the Atlantic, prompting tropical storm watches and warnings for Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach coastal waters.

According to the National Weather Service in Miami, the system is currently positioned between northeast Cuba and the Bahamas with sustained winds of 35 mph. Forecasters expect the storm to move north-northwest and intensify into a tropical storm within the next 24 hours.

Marine and coastal conditions are expected to deteriorate today, with showers, thunderstorms, and tropical storm–force wind gusts likely through Monday. Seas are forecast to rise between 9 and 11 feet, creating dangerous conditions for boaters and beachgoers along the Atlantic coast and Biscayne Bay.

“Efforts to protect life and property should be underway,” NWS officials said in their early Sunday advisory. The agency emphasized that residents should review hurricane supply kits and stay tuned to official updates.

The latest forecast track shows the storm passing just east of Florida, with potential strengthening as it approaches. While the system’s exact impact remains uncertain, South Florida is expected to see heavy rainfall, localized flooding, and strong winds beginning today.

Residents are urged to monitor forecasts closely at weather.gov/miami and follow local emergency management updates.
