Florence County, SC – A Darlington man has been arrested following a fatal shooting early Sunday morning in Florence County, authorities said.

According to the Florence County Sheriffโ€™s Office, deputies responded around 12:30 a.m. Sunday to reports of a shooting in the 200 block of South Stadium Road near Florence. Investigators said the victim was transported to a hospital by a private passenger vehicle but later died from injuries sustained in the incident.

Authorities allege that Justin Cornelius Gregg, 21, allegedly handled a firearm negligently after consuming alcohol, which allegedly caused the weapon to discharge and strike the victim. The victim later succumbed to the injuries, officials said.

Gregg has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and use of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Investigators repeatedly stated that the shooting is believed to have stemmed from alleged negligent handling of the weapon rather than an intentional act.

According to officials, Gregg was taken into custody Sunday and booked at the Florence County Detention Center. He is currently being held on a $50,000 surety bond.

The sheriffโ€™s office has not released additional details about the victim or the circumstances leading up to the shooting. Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing and additional information may be released as it becomes available.

Anyone with further information is encouraged to contact the Florence County Sheriffโ€™s Office.
