Huntsville, Alabama – Travel across northwest Alabama could become impossible late Friday night as a significant ice storm develops, threatening widespread power outages, tree damage, and dangerously slick roads through the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, an Ice Storm Warning is in effect from midnight Friday night through 6 p.m. Sunday for Lauderdale, Colbert, and Franklin counties. Ice accumulations between one-quarter inch and one inch are expected, along with up to one inch of snow and sleet. Officials warn that heavy ice on trees and power lines could result in power outages lasting more than a day.
Cities including Florence, Muscle Shoals, Sheffield, Tuscumbia, Russellville, and Red Bay are expected to see rapidly deteriorating conditions overnight Friday. Bridges and overpasses are likely to ice over first, especially along U.S. Highway 72, U.S. Highway 43, and secondary roads across the Shoals. Emergency managers warn that prolonged outages combined with colder air arriving after the storm could lead to dangerous indoor temperatures.
Residents are urged to restrict travel to emergencies only and prepare now for extended power disruptions. Officials recommend charging electronic devices, gathering food and water, and having flashlights, batteries, and blankets readily available. Anyone who must travel should carry emergency supplies and monitor road conditions through 511.
The Ice Storm Warning remains in effect through Sunday evening, and additional advisories may be issued as conditions evolve across northwest Alabama.
