Des Moines, IA – Iowa is experiencing significant flooding along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, causing widespread concern.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Quad Cities, IA/IL, the Mississippi River is expected to face flooding conditions through the beginning of July. Forecasts currently incorporate the next 24 hours of rainfall, with additional rain potentially exacerbating the situation. Key areas affected include Dubuque, Bellevue, Fulton, Camanche, Illinois City, Muscatine, Le Claire, Rock Island, and New Boston.

The NWS in Des Moines reports moderate to record flooding at various locations, with some crests surpassing the 1993 levels. The floodwaters will take time to move through the state. Major concerns include the West and East Forks of the Des Moines River, the Des Moines River above Saylorville Lake, and parts of the Cedar River. Record flooding has already been observed on the West Fork of the Des Moines River at Estherville and Emmetsburg, with severe impacts in Humboldt.

Residents are urged to stay informed through official channels and heed any evacuation orders. Floodwaters can cause rapid changes in conditions, making vigilance crucial for public safety. Updates are available at weather.gov/desmoines/water.
