Flooding Risks in North Carolina as Torrential Downpours Continue

Newport, NC – Continued wet weather is expected through the weekend in North Carolina, with scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms mainly in the afternoons and evenings. Forecasts predict torrential downpours, with 1-2 inches of rain possible through Sunday, and locally heavier amounts in some areas.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Newport/Morehead City, Saturday brings a Marginal threat for severe weather (Level 1 of 5), with damaging wind gusts being the main concern. Urban and poor drainage flooding are likely in the heaviest downpours.

Today’s forecast shows an 80% chance of rain with temperatures ranging from 72°F to 86°F. Rainy conditions are expected to begin around 6 PM. Saturday will see a 65% chance of rain with temperatures between 74°F and 87°F. Sunday continues the trend with a 60% chance of rain and temperatures from 75°F to 85°F.

The beginning of next week will remain unsettled, with rain chances decreasing slightly each day. Monday’s forecast predicts a 55% chance of rain, while Tuesday and Wednesday expect a 50% and 40% chance of showers, respectively. Temperatures throughout the week will hover in the mid-70s to upper 80s.
