Memphis, TN – A severe weather system impacting the Mid-South is expected to bring significant rainfall through Sunday, creating a high risk of flooding across multiple states. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Flood Watch for East Arkansas, West Tennessee, and North Mississippi, with rainfall totals possibly reaching up to 15 inches in some areas.
According to the NWS, the heaviest rain will fall along and north of Interstate 40, where catastrophic flooding is anticipated in rivers, streams, and low-lying areas. Excessive rainfall could lead to flash flooding, posing a serious risk to commuters, local residents, and first responders. Authorities have warned that creeks and streams could overflow, with street flooding becoming widespread.
The watch is in effect until Sunday morning in regions including Memphis, Jackson, and surrounding communities. Cities in North Mississippi and Southeast Missouri are also at risk, with rainfall totals of up to 8 inches expected. Residents in flood-prone areas are urged to stay vigilant and monitor the latest updates from local authorities.
The NWS recommends that residents avoid driving through flooded roads and prepare for potential evacuations in the event of severe flooding.
