Greenville, SC – The US National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, SC, has issued a flood watch for regions along and east of I-77 due to the anticipated impact of Tropical Storm Debby. As of 6:30 PM on August 6, the flood watch is in effect with expectations of 5-8 inches of rainfall by Friday morning, with locally higher amounts possible. Heavy rainfall is expected to start late Wednesday night and continue through Friday afternoon.
According to the latest advisory, Tropical Storm Debby is currently offshore near the SC/GA state line and is projected to move further offshore while potentially re-intensifying slightly. Confidence has increased regarding the heaviest rainfall amounts occurring along and east of I-77. Debby’s track has shifted slightly east in the latest advisory.
Residents in the affected areas are urged to stay weather aware and continue to get information from trusted sources. The forecast highlights significant concerns for flash flooding, with the greatest risk in areas predicted to receive 6-8 inches of rain. Localized flash flooding is also possible elsewhere in the watch area. The National Weather Service advises setting up weather alerts on phones, seeking higher ground when warned of a flash flood, and avoiding flooded waters.
