Bourbonnais, IL – A flood watch has been issued for the Kankakee River starting Thursday afternoon. Authorities warn of potential flooding caused by a developing ice jam.
According to the National Weather Service, the flood watch spans from the Illinois-Indiana state line downstream to the Iroquois River confluence at Aroma Park. The Momence gauge is being closely monitored. Water levels could overtop low-lying banks at River Isle upstream from Momence if levels reach 4 feet.
As of 12:45 p.m. Thursday, the river stage measured 3.6 feet. Forecasters expect rising water levels due to ice accumulation. Past ice jams in this area caused the river to crest near the 5-foot flood stage.
Residents in affected areas are urged to stay vigilant and monitor updates. Flood safety tips and further details are available at weather.gov/safety/flood.
Officials recommend moving to higher ground if flooding occurs and avoiding flooded areas. This watch will remain active until conditions improve.
