Springfield, IL – A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for central and southern Illinois through Monday morning, as showers and thunderstorms are expected to redevelop later today, bringing the potential for flash flooding across the region. Areas along and south of a line stretching from Rushville to Lincoln to Hoopeston could see heavy rainfall, with rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour, raising concerns for local flooding.
According to the National Weather Service, excessive runoff from these storms may lead to flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other flood-prone locations. Low-water crossings are particularly vulnerable, and extensive street flooding is possible in cities such as Springfield, Decatur, and Urbana.
Residents are urged to prepare for sudden flooding conditions, particularly in areas where the ground remains saturated from previous rainfall. The storms are expected to continue through the evening and linger into early Monday morning. In some locations, rainfall could accumulate rapidly, compounding the flooding risks.
As a result, authorities advise staying alert for any Flash Flood Warnings issued later in the evening. Avoid driving through flooded roads and be prepared to take action if conditions worsen.
Flood watches are in effect until 9 a.m. Monday, and additional advisories could follow as conditions evolve. For more information, visit the National Weather Service flood safety page.
