Davenport, Iowa – Rising rivers and flooded streets could disrupt travel and daily routines across the Iowa-Illinois border tonight as a Flood Watch remains in effect for more than 25 counties, including the Quad Cities and Galesburg.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Lincoln and the Quad Cities, multiple rounds of thunderstorms are set to dump heavy rain on already saturated ground, with the greatest risk running from Friday afternoon through late tonight. The alert covers eastern Iowa counties from Dubuque and Johnson to Muscatine and Clinton, as well as west central Illinois areas like Knox, Marshall, and Rock Island.
Residents in Davenport, Iowa City, Moline, and Galesburg should brace for rapid rises in creeks and streams, road closures in low-lying areas, and possible basement flooding, especially where drainage is poor. State and local emergency managers urge everyone to avoid driving through water-covered roads, keep cell phones charged, and prepare to move to higher ground if flood warnings are issued. River flooding and urban flash floods could strand vehicles and delay emergency services.
Tonight’s storms will mark the second time this week that back-to-back rain bands have swept through the region, raising river levels near spring flood stage in some spots. More advisories could follow if additional storms develop over the weekend.
Warnings remain in effect through midnight. Monitor NWS and local alerts for possible upgrades to Flood Warnings.
