Charleston, WV – A flood watch remains in effect for portions of West Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky through Sunday morning, as heavy rainfall continues to pose a significant risk for flooding.
The National Weather Service issued the alert early Thursday, warning that excessive rainfall could cause flooding in small rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying areas. Some mainstem rivers, including the Hocking and Muskingum rivers, may eventually see elevated water levels into the weekend and early next week.
The affected areas include counties in northeast Kentucky, such as Boyd and Greenup, southeast Ohio counties like Athens and Gallia, and parts of West Virginia, including Cabell and Jackson. This widespread region is expected to experience rounds of showers and thunderstorms, caused by a front moving over the middle Ohio Valley.
Officials urge residents to monitor the situation and be prepared for possible flood warnings. Areas prone to flooding should take precautions, as localized flash flooding could develop quickly.
