Richmond, Va. – Roads across Central and Eastern Virginia could flood by late Friday as torrential rainfall moves in under a widespread Flash Flood Watch stretching from Appomattox to Accomack.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Wakefield and Blacksburg, the watch takes effect at 2 p.m. Friday and continues through late tonight, with several rounds of thunderstorms expected to drop excessive rainfall across more than 30 counties. Urban areas and low-lying spots are especially vulnerable to rapid runoff and flash flooding.
Cities including Richmond, Hampton, Newport News, Gloucester, and Williamsburg are at risk of water-covered roads, especially during the evening commute. Storm drains could become overwhelmed, and low-water crossings in Buckingham and Appomattox Counties may be impassable by nightfall.
Residents should avoid non-essential travel, especially on secondary roads prone to flooding. Charge devices, clear gutters, and have a plan to relocate if you live in flood-prone zones.
This is the first major flooding risk of June for much of the region, fueled by a stalled front and Gulf moisture. Additional watches or warnings are possible if rainfall intensifies or lingers into Saturday.
⚠️ The Flood Watch remains in effect through midnight. Stay alert for warnings.
