Murphysboro, IL – A Flood Warning remains in effect for parts of southern Illinois as significant rainfall continues to impact the Big Muddy River. Over the past week, rainfall totals ranging from 6 to 9 inches have caused river levels to rise dramatically, leading to the forecast of major flooding in Murphysboro and moderate flooding near Plumfield.

According to the National Weather Service, the Big Muddy River near Murphysboro is expected to reach major flood stage by Thursday morning, with crests continuing to rise throughout the week. The river is projected to crest at 32.8 feet, well above the flood stage of 20 feet. In Plumfield, moderate flooding is also expected, with the river set to crest at 34.0 feet, approaching historical flood levels.

Residents and motorists in the affected areas are urged to exercise caution, especially when near riverbanks or driving on flooded roads. The National Weather Service warns to “turn around, don’t drown,” as driving through flooded areas can be deadly. Those in flood-prone areas are advised to stay updated on conditions and to avoid areas with barricades.
