Shreveport, LA – The start of May brings intense weather to Shreveport with spring storms poised to cause flooding and disrupt the area overnight and through Thursday. Heavy rain and thunderstorms will move across the region, putting low-lying areas and streets at risk for flooding.
According to the National Weather Service, a Flood Warning remains in effect for parts of Bossier and Caddo Parishes until 5 a.m. CDT Thursday. The storm system has already produced rainfall amounts exceeding six inches, with more expected in the coming hours. Local authorities urge residents to stay off the roads and avoid areas prone to flooding. If you encounter flooded streets, remember: Turn around, don’t drown.
The risk for flooding is heightened due to excessive rainfall that has already soaked the region. Areas along the Red River, including Shreveport and Bossier City, could see flash floods in the early morning hours, as additional rainfall up to 0.25 inches is possible. Areas like Cross Lake and the east side of the city are especially vulnerable to rising waters, according to NWS reports.
Beyond the immediate flood threat, thunderstorms will continue through Thursday, bringing further risks of heavy rain and lightning. Local residents should be prepared for possible delays and disruptions, especially on roadways like I-20 and Highway 71, which could face poor visibility and water over the roads.
Looking ahead, Shreveport will experience a slight break in the weather by the weekend, with mostly sunny skies and highs in the upper 70s expected on Saturday. However, be prepared for additional storms by Monday, as conditions remain unstable throughout the first week of May.
