St. Louis, MO – The National Weather Service has extended flood warnings for sections of the Kaskaskia River in Illinois, affecting the towns of New Athens, Vandalia, and Carlyle. Moderate to major flooding is occurring in these areas, with forecasted impacts extending through Thursday and Sunday.

The Kaskaskia River at New Athens is currently at 84.0 feet, with predictions indicating a crest of 86.5 feet by Wednesday morning. Flooding is expected to remain significant, with levels staying above flood stage until Sunday morning. The river is expected to gradually recede after peaking.

In Carlyle, minor flooding continues with the river sitting at 19.4 feet, significantly above the flood stage of 16.5 feet. Flooding is expected to persist until further notice, maintaining levels steady through the week.

Vandalia is also experiencing moderate flooding, with river levels standing at 24.9 feet, well above the flood stage of 18.0 feet. The river is anticipated to fall below flood stage by Wednesday morning but will still see moderate flooding through Thursday.
