Memphis, TN – A Flood Watch has been issued for portions of North Mississippi and West Tennessee from Saturday morning through late Saturday night, with excessive rainfall expected to cause localized flooding.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, multiple rounds of training thunderstorms will produce widespread rainfall totals of 2 to 5 inches, with some areas receiving even higher amounts. The affected areas include Alcorn, Benton, Calhoun, Chickasaw, Itawamba, Lafayette, Lee, Monroe, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Tippah, Tishomingo, Union, and Yalobusha counties in Mississippi, as well as Benton, Carroll, Chester, Decatur, Hardeman, Hardin, Henderson, Henry, Madison, and McNairy counties in Tennessee.
The heavy rainfall is expected to begin around 7 a.m. Saturday and continue through 1 a.m. Sunday. The persistent downpours could lead to flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and low-lying areas, creating hazardous conditions for travelers and residents.
Officials urge residents to stay alert for flood warnings and avoid driving through flooded roadways. Those in flood-prone areas should take precautions, including securing property and having an emergency plan in place.
