Cloudcroft, N.M. – Heavy rain this weekend could lead to dangerous flooding across the Sacramento Mountains, where a Flood Watch will be in effect from Saturday afternoon through Sunday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in El Paso, slow-moving thunderstorms will develop Saturday with enough moisture to drop 1 to 3 inches of rainfall across higher terrain. Flooding is most likely near rivers, streams, and low-lying areas, with the greatest danger around recent wildfire burn scars where the ground cannot absorb water.

Communities including Mayhill, Sunspot, Mescalero, Timberon, and Cloudcroft may see flash flooding along mountain roads and low-water crossings. Apache Summit and Mountain Park are also at risk if runoff overwhelms culverts and small creeks.

Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roadways and use alternate routes if water rises. Residents should prepare to move to higher ground quickly if flooding develops and keep emergency supplies ready in case of power outages or blocked roads.

The Flood Watch remains in effect through Sunday evening, and additional warnings may be issued if storms stall over the mountains.
