Flemingsburg, KY – Severe thunderstorms are rolling across eastern and northern Kentucky Monday evening, with the National Weather Service (NWS) warning of damaging winds, hail, and flash flooding risks.
According to the NWS office in Jackson, storms moving northeast at up to 70 mph have triggered warnings across Fleming, Mason, Powell, Bath, Rowan, Estill, Menifee, Montgomery, and surrounding counties. Residents in both Kentucky and parts of southern Ohio are being urged to seek shelter immediately.
At 5:30 p.m., radar indicated a severe storm near Mount Carmel in Fleming County producing wind gusts of up to 60 mph and quarter-size hail. Additional storms near Mount Sterling, Owingsville, and Irvine were also tracking northeast, threatening structures, trees, and power lines.
The NWS warned that torrential rainfall could quickly lead to flash flooding. Motorists are advised not to drive through water-covered roads. Communities such as Maysville, Ripley, West Union, Morehead, and Beattyville remain in the storm’s projected path.
Forecasters also noted a possible tornado threat in northeastern Fleming County.
The severe thunderstorm warnings remain in effect until 6 p.m. EDT, with new alerts possible if storms continue to strengthen.
Residents are advised to monitor local weather updates and take shelter in an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building until the storms pass.
