Des Moines, Iowa – Flash flooding is overwhelming roads and neighborhoods across Worth County early Thursday after up to 7 inches of rain fell overnight, prompting a Flash Flood Warning until 4:45 a.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, local law enforcement reported flooding already underway in low-lying areas, with another inch of rain possible before sunrise. Storms that began late Wednesday night have dumped torrential rainfall across towns like Northwood, Manly, Fertile, and Rice Lake.

Water is spilling over small creeks and streams, flooding highways, underpasses, and poor drainage areas. Law enforcement warns drivers to avoid travel in the affected zone. Key locations impacted include Rice Lake State Park, Northwood Municipal Airport, and U.S. Route 65 near Kensett.

Residents are urged to stay off flooded roadways, especially during the early morning hours when visibility is reduced. “Turn around, don’t drown” remains critical advice—most flood-related deaths happen in vehicles.

This is a rapidly evolving situation. The Flash Flood Warning remains in effect through 4:45 a.m., and additional advisories may follow as rainfall continues and runoff increases.
