Chicago, IL – Severe weather is expected to impact northeastern Illinois and northwestern Indiana tonight, with the potential for damaging winds, tornadoes, and heavy rain causing flash flooding. The storms are forecast to develop from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m., according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

According to the NWS, a squall line will move over northern Illinois tonight, sweeping southeast into early Sunday morning. Strong wind gusts and torrential downpours will accompany these storms, raising concerns for localized flash flooding. Areas such as Rockford, DeKalb, Elgin, and Chicago are expected to see storm activity from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., while Joliet and Kankakee may experience severe weather between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. The storms are predicted to reach Valparaiso and Rensselaer after 1 a.m.

The NWS warns that the strongest storms may produce damaging winds capable of downing tree limbs and fences, as well as some tornadoes. Additionally, the heavy rainfall could result in localized flash flooding in affected areas.

Residents are advised to have multiple ways to receive warning information and to exercise caution when driving in heavy rain. The NWS emphasizes the importance of being prepared for severe weather and monitoring local updates throughout the evening.
