Indianapolis, Ind. – Drivers across Central Indiana should brace for flash flooding starting Sunday afternoon as multiple rounds of heavy thunderstorms sweep through the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, a Flood Watch is in effect from 1 p.m. Sunday through Monday evening for more than 50 counties, including Marion, Tippecanoe, Monroe, and Vigo. Rainfall totals from back-to-back storms may overwhelm creeks, roads, and low-lying areas, particularly in urban centers like Indianapolis and Bloomington.
Localized flooding is most likely along major routes such as I-65, I-70, and US-231, where water can pool quickly. Cities including Lafayette, Muncie, and Shelbyville could see downpours that dump 1–3 inches per hour, especially in slow-moving storms. Officials urge residents to avoid driving through standing water and to stay alert for sudden road closures.
Emergency management teams in counties like Johnson and Delaware are monitoring water levels near flood-prone zones. If Flash Flood Warnings are issued, immediate action may be needed to move to higher ground.
Rain chances remain elevated through Monday evening. More watches or warnings could follow depending on storm development.
