Binghamton, NY – A flood watch is in effect for much of New York from Friday morning through early Saturday due to the remnants of Tropical System Debby. The National Weather Service has issued a moderate risk for flash flooding Friday into Friday night, when the heaviest rain is expected to fall.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the primary concern is flash flooding, with almost all the rainfall projected to occur from Friday into Friday night. River flooding is also a possibility as creeks and streams drain into main-stem rivers, potentially extending the flood risk into the weekend. The heaviest rainfall is anticipated over western New York, particularly affecting the Chemung Basin and upper Susquehanna regions.

Additionally, isolated tornadoes may occur, especially east of Interstate 81, increasing the potential danger of this weather system. Forecasts indicate that rainfall could reach up to 4 inches in some areas, with widespread totals between 1.5 and 3 inches.

Residents are advised to stay informed and prepare for possible flash floods and river flooding. Flood watches and warnings will be updated as the system progresses.

The most intense rainfall from Debby’s remnants is expected Friday afternoon through evening, with conditions moving quickly but bringing significant precipitation in a short time. The flood watch may be expanded or adjusted as the situation develops.
