DeKalb, Illinois – Heavy rain is overwhelming parts of north-central Illinois this evening as slow-moving storms trigger flash flooding in southern DeKalb and central Lee counties. Streets and low-lying areas near Shabbona, Compton, and Paw Paw could become impassable within the hour.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, radar and rain gauges show 2 to 3 inches of rain falling per hour in the warned area. A Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 8:30 p.m. for towns including Sandwich, Hinckley, Waterman, Amboy, and Lake Holiday.
Localized flooding has already been reported along rural roads and drainage ditches, with water rising rapidly near Woodhaven Lakes and Lee Center. Residents are urged to avoid underpasses, low spots, and roadways where water is collecting — even shallow water can stall vehicles or sweep them away.
If you live along streams or creeks, move to higher ground immediately. Emergency officials stress that flash flooding develops quickly and can be deadly if ignored.
This warning may be extended if storms persist or additional rainfall arrives. Stay alert for further updates from the National Weather Service or local emergency managers.
