Cedar Rapids, Iowa – Flash flooding closed roads across parts of eastern Iowa Friday afternoon, affecting cities including Vinton, Independence, and Manchester.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, 1 to 2.5 inches of rain fell over Benton, Buchanan, Delaware, and northwestern Linn counties, with another inch possible through 7:30 p.m. Emergency management officials reported flash flooding in low-lying areas and underpasses, especially in Vinton and Independence.
Travel is hazardous along Interstate 380 between mile markers 26 and 50, where water is accumulating on the roadway. Urban neighborhoods in Hiawatha, Center Point, and Belle Plaine have seen high water near major intersections and small creeks. Local drainage systems are overwhelmed, with several reports of impassable roads.
Drivers are advised to avoid flooded roads and use alternate routes. The National Weather Service continues to stress, “Turn around, don’t drown,” as even shallow water can stall vehicles or sweep them away.
A flash flood warning remains in effect for the region until 7:30 p.m. Friday. Additional alerts may be issued if heavy rain continues into the evening. Residents are encouraged to monitor emergency notifications for further updates.
