FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Snow will begin sticking to bridges and high-elevation highways by 8 p.m. Monday, creating slick travel across the Mogollon Rim and Kaibab Plateau ahead of the Tuesday morning commute. Wind gusts up to 50 mph will blow snow across roadways, reducing visibility overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 8 p.m. Monday until 5 p.m. MST Tuesday. Snow totals during this first round will range from 3 to 9 inches, including 6 to 8 inches near Forest Lakes, 4 to 6 inches in Flagstaff, Munds Park, and Jacob Lake, and 2 to 4 inches around Williams and Doney Park. Lighter amounts are expected near Fredonia and Heber-Overgaard.
A Winter Storm Watch then takes effect late Tuesday night through Wednesday evening, when an additional round of heavier snow could push storm totals up to 10 inches in higher terrain.
Interstate 40 near Flagstaff, Interstate 17 southbound toward Munds Park, and Highway 87 near Forest Lakes are likely to become snow-packed, especially during peak commute hours. Drivers should delay non-essential travel and check conditions at az511.gov or by calling 511.
Advisories remain in place through Wednesday evening, and updates are expected as the next surge of snow develops.
