FLAGSTAFF, Arizona – Dangerous crosswinds and blowing dust are expected across northern Arizona today as powerful southerly winds sweep through the high country. Gusts could reach 50 mph along I-40, U.S. 89, and U.S. 160, reducing visibility and making travel hazardous for high-profile vehicles.

According to the National Weather Service Flagstaff office, a Wind Advisory remains in effect through 7 p.m. MST (8 p.m. MDT) for the Coconino Plateau, Western Mogollon Rim, and Yavapai County Mountains. Sustained winds of 25–35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected through this evening before easing overnight.

Drivers on east–west corridors, particularly I-40 between Williams and Winslow, should prepare for sudden gusts and drifting debris. The weather service also warns of falling branches and weakened trees in burn scar areas. Residents should secure outdoor items such as patio furniture, trash cans, and trampolines to prevent damage or injury.

Blowing dust may temporarily lower visibility in open valleys and along the Little Colorado River Basin, posing additional risks for those traveling between Flagstaff, Page, and Prescott. Conditions will calm late tonight as winds turn lighter from the west, bringing a cooler, quieter midweek pattern.
