Flagstaff, AZ – Heavy monsoon rains on Friday could trigger dangerous flash floods and debris flows across the Dragon Bravo Fire Scar in northern Arizona, with Bright Angel Creek identified as the highest-risk area. Officials warn that even locations unaccustomed to flooding could see sudden, life-threatening water surges.

According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, monsoon moisture will fuel strong thunderstorms Friday afternoon and evening. Burn scars from last year’s Dragon Bravo Fire have left soils unstable, increasing the likelihood of debris, rock, and sediment washing into key drainages. Areas of concern include Kwagunt Creek, South Canyon, North Canyon, and Crystal Creek, all of which flow toward the Colorado River.

Travelers and hikers in and around the Grand Canyon are urged to avoid low-lying washes and canyon floors during storms. Sudden rises in water levels can occur miles downstream from rainfall. Park officials advise carrying weather radios, checking updated forecasts before backcountry travel, and seeking higher ground immediately if water begins to rise.

The heightened flood risk is expected to last through the weekend as additional storms develop. More watches and warnings could be issued if rainfall rates increase.
