Flagstaff, Arizona – A strong storm system moving across northern Arizona could bring up to 8 inches of mountain snow and wind gusts near 40 mph along Interstate 40 and Interstate 17 through midweek.
According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, south winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts between 30 and 40 mph will develop Monday as clouds thicken ahead of the system. Mountain snow and valley rain are expected to begin Monday night.
Snow levels are forecast to lower to between 5,500 and 6,500 feet Tuesday, with accumulations of 2 to 5 inches possible. By Wednesday, snow levels may fall further, potentially reaching 4,000 to 4,500 feet, with total mountain accumulations of 4 to 8 inches possible in higher terrain.
Southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph will continue Tuesday and Wednesday, with gusts up to 40 mph at times. Decreasing showers are expected Thursday as the system exits the region.
Communities including Flagstaff, Williams and areas along I-40 and I-17 could see periods of reduced visibility and slick travel conditions during heavier snowfall.
Lower elevations may see rain initially before transitioning to snow as colder air arrives midweek.
