Southwest Michigan – Residents in Berrien and Cass counties should prepare for heavy lake-effect snow beginning Monday and continuing into Tuesday. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch, warning of snow accumulations between 5 and 8 inches, with localized areas seeing up to 1-2 inches per hour during peak snowfall.

According to the National Weather Service, the watch is in effect from early Monday morning through Tuesday morning. Travel could become treacherous, particularly along Interstate 94, U.S. 12, and U.S. 31, as visibility may be severely reduced during heavy snow bursts. Officials recommend avoiding unnecessary travel during this time and ensuring vehicles are equipped with emergency kits.

The system is expected to develop overnight Sunday into Monday, with snowfall intensifying by Monday afternoon. The heaviest accumulation is forecast for southwestern Michigan, where colder air moving over Lake Michigan will fuel the lake-effect snow bands.

Five-Day Outlook:

Monday: Partly sunny early, snow developing later. High near 30°F, with west winds at 10 mph.

• Monday Night: Heavy snow likely. Low around 21°F. Snowfall rates may reach 1-2 inches per hour.

• Tuesday: Snow continuing through the morning, tapering by afternoon. High near 33°F.

• Wednesday: Chance of snow showers. High near 39°F. Potential rain/snow mix by evening.

• Thursday: Mostly cloudy and colder. High near 28°F.

Residents are advised to stay informed through local weather updates and prepare for potential disruptions. Keep driveways and sidewalks clear, and check on neighbors who may need assistance during the storm.
