Chicago, IL – After a stretch of mild fall days, Illinois may see its first snow of the season just ahead of Thanksgiving, as colder air moves across the Midwest, according to the NOAA Climate Prediction Center (CPC).
The October 24, 2025 NOAA forecast shows warmer-than-average temperatures early this month, but a sharp cooldown is likely between November 15–23. That could bring light snow or flurries to Chicago, Rockford, and Peoria, with the highest chances across the northern half of the state.
Forecasters expect totals to stay light—generally a dusting to an inch—but timing could coincide with the Thanksgiving travel window, potentially creating slick spots on I-55, I-39, and I-90. Central Illinois may see mixed precipitation, while southern Illinois remains rain-only.
NOAA says this will not be a major system but may mark the season’s first measurable snow for northern Illinois and the start of a colder, more active late fall pattern.
