Sacramento, CA – California could see its first mountain snow of the season before Thanksgiving, as a series of Pacific storm systems bring colder air and moisture into the Sierra Nevada and northern mountains, according to the NOAA Climate Prediction Center (CPC).

The October 24, 2025 forecast shows dry, mild weather dominating early November, but a mid-month shift could deliver light to moderate snow to South Lake Tahoe, Redding’s foothills, and Mount Shasta, with Sacramento expecting mostly chilly rain and frost.

Forecasters say elevations above 4,000 feet could see 4–8 inches of snow, potentially impacting I-80 near Donner Pass and U.S. 50 through the Sierra as holiday travel ramps up.

NOAA notes that this won’t be a major winter storm, but it may mark the official start of California’s snow season, ushering in colder Pacific systems heading into December.
