Grand Rapids, MI – Michigan could see its first statewide snowfall of the season before Thanksgiving, as colder air and lake-effect systems move through the Great Lakes region, according to the NOAA Climate Prediction Center (CPC).

NOAA’s October 24, 2025 outlook calls for a mild start to November, followed by a sharp cooldown around November 15–23. That window could bring light to moderate snow across Grand Rapids and northern Lower Michigan, with the Upper Peninsula (including Marquette) likely seeing the first measurable accumulation of the season.

Detroit and southeastern Michigan may stay mostly rain early, but forecasters say a brief rain-to-snow mix is possible near Thanksgiving as colder air deepens.

Lake-effect snow could briefly intensify along the Lake Michigan shoreline, with light accumulations possible in west-central counties. NOAA notes that the pattern marks the beginning of Michigan’s winter transition, arriving right on time for late November.
