Des Moines, IA – Iowa could see its first measurable snow of the season before Thanksgiving, as colder air settles into the Midwest and early winter systems track across the region, according to the NOAA Climate Prediction Center (CPC).
The October 24, 2025 outlook shows above-normal temperatures through early November, but a pattern shift around November 15–23 is expected to bring colder and stormier conditions. That could produce light snow or flurries in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and Sioux City, especially in the northern and central parts of the state.
Forecasters say totals will likely stay light — a dusting to an inch — but timing close to Thanksgiving week could mean slick roads for early travelers. Southern Iowa is expected to stay mostly rain, though temperatures could drop below freezing overnight.
NOAA says this mid-November cooldown marks the start of Iowa’s transition into winter, lining up with seasonal norms across the Upper Midwest.
